چکیده

There has been serious suspicion of a spurious rejection of the unit roots in panel studies of PPP due to the failure to control for cross-sectional dependence. This article presents evidence of mean-reversion in industrial country real exchange rates in a set up that accounts naturally for cross-sectional dependence, is invariant to the benchmark currency and capable of detecting against regime changes, and actually tests for the null of interest, ie. the purchasing power parity. Our results are based on a KPSS test for the stationarity null generalized in a multivariate random walk plus noise model by Nyblom and Harvey (1998). JEL classi ̄cation: C22, C52, F31, F47

Searching for evidence of long-run PPP from a post-Bretton Woods panel: separating the wheat from the chaff

This paper reexamines the issue of long-run PPP using multiple panel tests in the framework of confirmatory analysis. Application of six panel tests under competing null hypotheses to the real exchange rates of 21 industrial countries yields seemingly contradictory evidence on the parity during the post-Bretton Woods period. Regardless of numeraire currency, four I(1) panel tests unanimously re...

PPP: a Disaggregated View

By disaggregating price indices, it becomes apparent that the real exchange rate consists of the real exchange rate for a single good and a weighted sum of relative prices between goods. When applying a battery of panel unit root tests to this sum and its components, it is found that both the sum and the relative prices are non-stationary. This implies that PPP is invalid even if the LOP holds ...

Purchasing Power Parity and the Real Rand-dollar Exchange Rate

his paper tests for evidence in support of the purchasing power parity (PPP) in the bilateral real exchange rate series of the South African rand against the US dollar. The importance of considering structural breaks in the PPP test is illustrated. Using standard unit root tests without considering structural breaks, the study is unable to reject the null hypothesis of a unit root in the exchan...
